Pain Therapy

Everyone is well aware of pain - defined by the largest organisation related to pain (the International Association for the Study of Pain, IASP) as an “unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage”.

Pain, no matter how unpleasant it may be, is broadly advantageous to us in the sense that it warns us of some dysfunction in our body - in one or more of our organs. At the same time it has many negative effects. Above all, of course, there is an extra emotional factor, which is especially typical of man. This is the reason why pain so often goes hand-in-hand with suffering. This is common to all kinds of pain, whether diagnosed as important or not.

In terms of duration and origin, pain may be broken down into a number of categories. The origin of the pain may be related to an organ or to the nervous system: it may be a disorder of the locomotor system or of any internal organ. It may be a consequence of some degenerative or malignant disease. It occurs both in the young and the old. There is always suffering in pain: it hinders the perfect working of the body and affects the soul; it can make normal daily life impossible.
Today, one out of five people suffer from some form of chronic pain – i.e., pain which lasts for several months at least - and everyone lives with it in a different way.

At the same time, in most cases there is help, and there has been enormous progress in the treatment of pain within the field of medicine. This is true both in respect of medication-based therapies and invasive treatment.
